Artist Watch

Welcome to my first ever Artist Watch. In these posts I will be sharing with you the artists that are getting me excited at the moment. They won’t always feature brand new releases, but are instead designed to give you a blend of tastes, which will hopefully lead you towards some things you may not have heard before.

This week’s Artist Watch brings you a band I’ve only recently started following. They are an American indie rock four piece who’s stomping back catalogue is guaranteed to get you excited. They are currently touring the US well into next year and will also be playing in New Zealand and Australia. As well as this, they are on the bill for a one off show in London, where they’ll be supporting another great American band that will be featuring on my blog in the near future, The National. These shows come off the back of their latest release from August of this year titled, A Deeper Understanding. If you haven’t already guessed it, the band I’ve chosen for this week is, The War On Drugs.

This band really inspires me from a creative perspective. Each of their four studio releases are all packed with incredibly powerful but delicate melodies that you will be humming along to in your head for days on end. My favourite tune from the newest album and one I definitely recommend you check out is a song called “Holding On”. This is a great record to listen to whilst driving, the upbeat tempo of the synth and drums together grab a hold of you and make you feel like you’re sprinting down route 66 with the roof down in the sunshine. Being a guitar player myself, I particularly enjoy the way the lead guitar weaves around the rhythm section. I always say that knowing when not to play is just as important as knowing when to play and the guitar lines in this song are a perfect example of that.

The War On Drugs are a special band. You can clearly hear influences from legends such as Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan, but it isn’t in any way corny or unoriginal. It just works and the albums that this band release are albums you can listen to when you are relaxing, when you are driving, when you want something that’s going to get you going. They somehow manage to tick all of these boxes at the same time. Adam Granduciel is a frontman I have gained huge respect for, and his vocal melodies will pull you in and make you fall in love with this great band. The band are currently signed to a two album record deal with Atlantic Records so I can’t wait to hear what’s next for them. Hopefully after reading this today you will all start looking forward to it just as much as I am.

Whether you’re a new visitor, or someone that’s returned to view this blog again, thank you so much. Please share with your friends, family and whoever else you’d like to. I hope you’ve enjoyed this first Artist Watch just as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it for you all. Don’t forget to comment, like, follow and anything else you can think of doing if you enjoy my articles and want to see more!

See you soon!
